"Public Relations in the Glocal Disinformation Society"

The call for papers and book reviews is now open for Issue 30 of the International Journal of Public Relations, a monographic edition entitled "Public Relations in the Glocal Disinformation Society" and coordinated by professors Iván Puentes-Rivera (University of Vigo) and Julia Fontenla-Pedreira (University of Vigo).

The glocalization of disinformation is a phenomenon that combines the global spread of false, misleading, manipulated, or hateful content with its adaptation to local contexts, which increases its impact and credibility. Hoaxes and, more broadly, all discourses and communicative practices encompassed by disinformation are tailored to specific cultures, languages, and realities to gain legitimacy. This scenario poses significant challenges for Public Relations, which—now more than ever—must serve as guarantors and builders of trust between organizations and their publics, confronting the proliferation of manipulated narratives on multiple levels. Public Relations does not only manage reputations; it also plays an active role in strengthening public trust and democratic health.

Public Relations professionals thus play a key role in the detection, prevention, and response to disinformation. This involves monitoring conversations, crafting locally relevant messages, collaborating with media and fact-checkers, and promoting media literacy—in short, developing adapted and responsible communication strategies. They must act ethically, prioritizing transparency and the common good over the temptation to manipulate or silence critical voices. In a digital and analog environment saturated with misleading information, their work is fundamental to fostering a critical, informed, and resilient citizenry, and to safeguarding the survival of institutions and organizations—both public and private—and even the democratic system itself, in the face of glocal disinformation.

Submissions may be sent until October 31, 2025, and must be submitted exclusively through the journal's online platform, following the editorial guidelines available on its website: https://revistarelacionespublicas.uma.es/index.php/revrrpp. It is recommended that both articles and book reviews be written using this pre-formatted template that adheres to the journal’s standards. All proposals must include a section entitled “AI Statement” declaring the use of artificial intelligence tools, as well as reflecting this in the methodology section where relevant.

Original submissions are accepted in Spanish, English, Portuguese, and French. In order to ensure broader dissemination, all articles written in a language other than English must include an extended abstract in English (between 500 and 700 words). All texts must be written in an inclusive language. Authors must also have an ORCID number (visit http://orcid.org/about/membership) and be registered in then planform as an author of the proposal.
